Clutch or Tranny Problem

This truck, my latest problem is either in the clutch or tranny. Only periodically when I put the truck in reverse it won't come back out of that gear. Even with the clutch pushed to the floor it is still engaged and if you let off the the brake will continue to back up. I have to shut the truck off, let the clutch out and push it back in then it works fine. I have not been able to find any patterns in this happening. I thought maybe low on tranny fluid so I pulled the plug to check it and fluid ran out of the filler plug so it must have been overfilled, but after draining excess it is still doing this.

Hi, Sounds like it might be the pilot bearing sticking up at times.

I'd have to agree with the other two on the pilot bearing, but usually It'll act up in forward gears as well.

So far only in reverse, but who's to say what's comming. Pilot bearing means pulling the whole clutch and tranny to get to it if I'm guessin right. But somebody feel free to jump in and tell me I'm wrong and this will be a simple fix.

Junk Yard, I hate it when your right. Just took the wife out to lunch and driving through the parking lot I went to down shift into second and had to double clutch it to go in. I thought my days of double clutching were over when I quite driving them old big trucks.

It sure sounds like the pilot bearing is dry and seizing to the shaft. The best way to replace it is by removing the trans. I just did one last week, took 4.5 hours. When you get yours apart, check the trans input shaft for the pilot bearing. It will most likely be all chewed up. Replace the shaft and put a good clutch kit in it. Grease the bearing with a good hi temp bearing grease. Install the bearing with the seal towards the trans. The rest is all straight foreward. Please use safety stands under the truck when you jack it up. A tranny jack is quite helpfull too. Good luck
