Check Engine Light But No codes?

This evening on the way from work I noticed the Check Engine light on. Truck ran fine, all gauges normal. I was running my PM3 on level 9, as I have been since I got the tranny in on Monday. ;D
When I got home I attempted to check the codes by turning the ignition on while holding the trip odo button on the instrument cluster. I held the button until the odo said "check". It went through a check of all lights and the gauges, but did not display any codes.
Did I check the codes incorrectly for my 1999? I thought that was the way to do it.
Can the check engine light be on without any codes being set? ???

Thanks,
Chris

Try turning the key on and off three times, leaving it on the third time. Codes should read out on the odometer.

Doesn't work on 99's.

I think Stamey did it right, if he got the "check" must have done it correctly.

On my 2002 I have never had a check engine light come one (well, except for when all the lights check themselves) but for shitz and giggles thought I'd check for codes.
Ended up with 2 of them, P0500 and P1693.
(I know what they are, and why they were there, I was expecting them)

So I'd guess if you can throw codes without a light, then you probably can get a light without codes?

Maybe it was a temporary thing that fixed itself already?

Does the 99 display the code, or is it a morse code thingy with the check engine light, like earlier models?

Re:Check Engine Light But No codes?

You need to have it read by an OBDII reader. My Engine Malfunction Light came on on freeway at 65 mph. after three succesful starts without mallfunction light reset, but codes remained. Dealer read codes and erased them. l
PO381 Wait to start lamp - 94 starts ago low voltage
PO477 Inlet air temp low volts 111 starts ago
PO107 Inlet air pressure low volts

Got home and was listening to news/weather 1 hr later. Funnel clouds sighted in area where I had been when EMI light came on. PO107 was only recent code recorded. I guess sudden low air pressure can trigger that dang little light.

All gauges were normal and engine was operating properly. Why dont they manufacture one smart enough to repair itself?
Re:Check Engine Light But No codes?

Some '99s have the "3 on-off" codes, some don't.
Mine does.
Holding the odometer reset **** while Key on-off puts the instrument cluster/guages in "self-test" mode.

Ed

I think Advance Auto parts will pull codes for free.

Re:Check Engine Light But No codes?

Nothing worked so I went to my budy with the Scan tool. He found a 0253 code in there and cleared it out for me.
The code is "Fuel Injection Pump Fuel Valve Open Circuit". He printed the stuff about it for me. Possible causes include defective fuel injection pump, defective starter , defective battery , defective fuel injection pump relay, defective connectors, or defective wiring.

Kinda strange that the battery and starter could come into this mix, but OK. ???

Thanks for trying guys.

Chris

Three successful starts without malfunction = no codes.

I know I had several starts after the code showed up, and it did not go away. Changing nothing, the code has not re-appeared since being reset with the Scan tool, and I have done nothing under the hood. This is not to say it will never be back, but I'm not gonna worry until it comes back.

Chris
