Left rear emergency brake stuck

Just got back from the USMC yesterday and went to drive my truck. After about 25 miles on the highway, I noticed the left rear was smoking. Seems the e-brake shoes inside the disk hub were stuck even after I applied and released the e-brake a number of times to try and alleviate the problem. It finally released fully after it cooled down. Has anyone had this happen? It seems fine now, but I am leaving on a long road trip Wed May 21 and do not want this to happen again. Truck was sitting for about 1 month. Les Schwab tires wants 90.00 for the e-brake pads and 60.00 lab to do the left side. The seal is not leaking as of last night. In the center of the hub (from the outer edge of axle to outer edge of disk) the steel hub is flaking because of the heat that was generated.

TIA, Mike

Marine: I'd suggest that you change the stuff that is potentially damaged by the heat.
I've seen some nasty things from cars where the rear disk is the emergency brake drum. It wasn't shure why the emergency brake had overheated, but the heat had weakened the material so that the rear disk broke off and locked the wheel completely. This was very bad news for the passengers since the car swayed into an oncoming semi.

Just my 2c

AlpineRAM

Re:Left rear emergency brake stuck

From what I understand, there is a drum brake inside the hub that is part of the disc, so there is actually a set of pads for the disk, and a set of shoes for inside the drum (The emergency brake shoes). I can't imagine the whole read hub assembly would be cheap to buy.

Thanks, Mike

Well I do not know the newer Rams with 4 wheel disks.
On lots of cars the drum is a part of the disk ( looks like a hat, the drumbrake where you'd put your head, the caliper catching the brim, the wheel bolts straight up from your head)
So the integrity of the drum is essential to keep the disk attached to the hub. ( on these vehicles)

AlpineRAM
