Exclamation Broken wheel studs, help!

Hey guys,

Well I am travling from florida to Washington, and back. I am in Oregon right now and have 2 broken front wheel studs. Stoped and did a quike walk around and found the 2 studs gone, and all lug nuts where loose. Tightened every thing and pressed on to the Grandparents.
Now I have changed wheel studs on my 1st gen, but dont know what to expect when taking this front hub of this 2nd gen.
Will I have to put a all new unit bearing in there?
If a shop was to do the job what kind of price we looking at?
Any help with this would be great. I am here for 8 days before heading to Utah, then back to Florida.

Bob.

What part of Oregon are you in right now? I live in Grants Pass. I'm sure it can't be all that hard to replace them. Search the forums on here you should be able to find someone who has already done this and posted about it.

No you shouldn't have to replace the hub or rotor but you'll have to remove them in order to pound out the two broken ones and re-install. You might as well replace all of them. Make sure you get grade8 high quality, not some cheap cast studs. If they get hot from excessive breaking they'll become weak and break. NAPA usually has a good selection of quality parts.

sorry, but I'm not trying to say they got hot but things like this don't normally break so I'd make sure to check everything else.

Well he did say that the other lugs were loose too. Did you just have the tires rotated or brake work done anything that would require removing the wheel. Some shops don't always get things torqued again. This is the most common cause of broken studs.

If a shop does it I would venture a guess of around $300 or so, and they might break the hub if they aren't careful (the ones in my area usually aren't). If you tackle it yourself, you can do a search on hub removal, there's a truck to pressing the hub off using the power steering.

The basic rundown is:
Before you remove the wheel, break the hub retaining nut loose while it's on the ground. Clean the threads first as the nut sometimes peels the threads off the spindle on removal. Once it's broke loose, snug it back down good and tight.

Then take wheel & caliper off, loosen the 4 hub retaining bolts on the backside, then use power steering trick to bust the hub loose. Once you have the hub broke loose, you can take the hub nut all the way off the spindle. The hub nut basically keeps the hub together when you break the hub loose.

Support the axle shaft inside the housing so you don't damage the seals, then pull the hub/rotor assembly off. Then pull the axle out so you don't warp the seals.

Pound old studs out, pound new ones in.

Don't know torque specs, but the install is the reverse of removal.

Hope that helps out a bit. Good Luck.

On edit: If you get in a bind or need some torque specs shoot me a pm or post on here and I'll give you my number and grab my Hanes manual.

broken bolts/studs are usually caused by over tightening, most tire shops have no clue how a torque wrench is supposed to be used.... I've seen them rattle the lug nuts on with an impact wrench, then test with a torque wrench, if it doesn't turn, then they assume it's good enough.... here's the problem.... most air wrenches will tighten lug nuts more than the correct torque spec's.
resulting in stretched and weakened bolts/studs.....
when the spec's state the torque is 130 ft lbs, that's the max you can tighten it to maintain it's strength...... i carry a torque wrench just to prevent broken studs.
in my adult driving life, I've never had any wheel studs break

thanks

thanks every one. I am up in north eastern oregon, in a small town. Well heat might have been a problem, but the breakes are working great. I think the lugs got stretched when tires got installed. I have never broken a stud on a truck before this.

So whats the power steering method? And what type of grease dose this front beering take. I just ordered the new wheel studs.

any thing else i need to know. tourqe values on theese wheels, hub nut, excetra?

Thanks for all your help.

Bob.

These instructions are for replacing the rotor but it's the same process https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...6&postcount=10

One winter a while back several friends had wheels fall off with broken studs, heard of many others. Turned out a tire jockey in town was zapping down lug nuts full blast with an impact wrench when changing to winter tires...

Removing the hubs can be a real LONG weekend for some. They can be rusted in BIG time. Here is another thread for more hub removal info based on my experience with it:
