broken part while adjusting valves
broken part while adjusting valves
I decided to run the valves on my truck today and for the most part everything went pretty well. Except that while trying to remove the injection pump drive cover from the timing cover I broke it. Now all I have to screw back into the timing cover are the threads, not the cap part. Does that make sense? It's leaking oil and I don't know where to go to get a new one?
I think it is a plastic plug 2" to 3" in diameter that takes a 3/8 or 1/2 wratchet to fit the front of it? if it is what I'm thinking it is dealer only part, but that can be a Cummins dealer or Cummins parts supplier also, not just Dodge. The broken part might be the hard part to remove and you don't want any pieces falling into the timing cover /oil pan to possibly get into something and plug it. Use care and find a parts supplier to get the plug from. Like you said it leaks a lot of oil even when it is cracked and not broken. Only takes a few inch lbs of torque to seal it though as you have found out.
Yea, it screws on, but the thing was so tight on the timing cover that I actually broke it while trying to get it off. I'll call dodge tomorrow and see if I can get a replacement. Kind of a stupid little piece, anything that is threaded should be made of metal not plastic.
Agreed should be metal with an O-ring or seal. You at least know it's broken, the dealer servicing my truck broke mine and never said anything, only cracked but still broke,. We left next day for Flordia from Michigan and leaked oil all the way down, lost about 2 qts which wasn't too bad once I knew what was leaking, just a real mess with oil all over truck and fifth wheel, took hours to clean up afterwards.
