My truck ran fine all day and as i was coming home from the track i notice a whinning noise like a supercharger makes only while i am making boost and gets louder as i make more boost does this sound like a leak? Or should i check else where? It seems to run fine still it just a loud whine.

 

Sounds just like a boost leak, my 99 used to blow the lower intercooler clamps off and boy ohh boy you would know when this happened, it would sound like a firecracker then a 747 landing. Check all of your intercooler hoses upper and lower to see if one may have loosened up and slipped off or one might have a hole in it. Oil tends to eat the rubber boot away.

 

Well its not my guage cause i disconnected it and put the plug back in still does it. I tighened all the boost clamps last night no boots came off i can still get pretty good boost. i think there might back a crack in the one. Would i still be able to get as good boost as i am just about 30 psi with out the comp. on with mach 4's and a stock turbo with a really small crack? Is there anything else that could be whinning ? the only reason i think its this is because it gets louder as i build more boost.

 

I found one of my intercooler hoses the other day that was damaged. Mine was on the lower hose on the intercooler on the driverside. The fender had rubbed a hole in it.

 

did it make any noise?

 

Could it be the fan clutch?
they make it sound like a jet engine when they lock up and fail.

 

Keep going with the sound descriptions. I've been chasing a possible boost leak for about 6 months, no gauge yet. What I get is what I would call a howl, lower tone that matches the whistle of the turbo. Not all the time but most of the time. I do feel it's losing power but haven't found any problems with the boots. I've tightened everything up but there could still be a leak.

Guess I'll have to make the PVC tester or plumb in a gauge.

 

The best way to describe a boost leak is that it sounds alot like when you have a blowgun hooked to an air compressor and hit the button. A loud rushing of air. A howl, IMO could mean that your turbo bushings are going south and letting the compressor wheel rub the housing. It only takes 5 minutes to check. very little end play is ok, and you should have next to no side play... maybe .003"? It's cheap piece of mind by checking it. The turbo spins at such high speeds, that you wouldn't hear a grinding noise, but more than likely a howl.

 

I can sit there and have my motor at say 2000rpm and no whining , but i still here my spool of my turbo, it only happens when I build boost as soon as the guage reads about 10psi it makes the noise and then gets louder and louder as the guages goes up. The sound is what i can describe as a Super Charger Whine kinda like this is the best way i can explain it. o and i was thinking it was my turbo at first it still might be but yestarday i took off the intake tube and it spins fine no in and out play ill check side to side, up and down but if i remember correctly there was barely any. Doesnt the oil correct the play up and down?

 

make a boost tester out of pvc and check it,when doing it this way the engine won't be running so if there is a leak it will be easy to find.

 

How do you make one out of PVC? i never heard of this.

How can I check for boost leaks?
Answer: The simplest way is to idle the engine and spray a mixture of liquid soap and water around every joint in the air intake plumbing. Remember not to forget the intercooler itself. They are prone to leaking at the welds.

Another alternative is to build you own pressure tester. This is fairly simple and the price is pretty reasonable at $10.

The parts needed

The tester is as follows: 4"x3" fernco plumbing adapter, reduce the 3" side with 3" to 3/4" threaded pvc bushing, male/male 3/4" x3/4"x 2" nipple, 3/4"x1/2"x1/2" T, pipe pressure gauge to (1) 1/2" side, place supply air nipple in other 1/2" side(grainger has supply valves with 1/8" NPT). Pull the intake hose from the turbo, slip 4" fernco on, and pressurize to 20 psi(Slowly).
