Battery selection. Which size?

99 with the original mopars. With this colder weather I have noticed additional cranking and the voltage drops to the lower edge of the white range. It stays here for a couple minutes depending on how quick I get going. Prior winters it was never like this. Truck has been inside and plugged in. So I'm thinking time to replace these batteries before it gets really cold and I am left out in it. NAPA tells me their book recommends 700CCA batteries for my truck. Originals say 750 right on the tops. Would I regret going to a lower battery? ???

Re:Battery selection. Which size?

Go with as big as will fit in the battery trays. I was able to fit a couple of 880's under the hood in the trays but they just bearly fit. I would go any smaller than a 750, it takes 50 amps just to run the grid heaters, and that's a lot of juice when it's cold outside.<br><br>If moeny is no object go with a set of optima red tops, about $100 apeace. :'(<br><br>DB

Replaced mine several months ago with two NAPA Legends. 875 CCA if I remember right and about $78 a piece.<br>The right one always goes bad first then drags the left one down. My son is still using the left battery in his truck. <br>I had two 1225's in my 95 truck.

Re:Battery selection. Which size?

You have to be carefull with the large CCA small frame batteries. In those batteries they have all the plates really close together to make the 1000 CCA. But after a while in the cummins fired rams, the plate start to come loose and may touch inside the battery and cause the battery to loose its amps available.<br><br>IN our old first gens, we only got 1 1150 CCA battery to do the job, and its a big one. I have 2 in my rig that are too big to fit in the new battery trays, but its nice to have 2300 CCA on a cold morning.. I buy from Freightliner, I think they are Interstate.<br><br>J-eh
