Trans. Fluid
Trans. Fluid
I had a tranny line separate on me today while I was on the interstate. It came apart at the joint between the rubber and steel line at the tranny cooler. I was able to get it back together with a hose clamp, and a buddy brought me some fluid. My question is when I changed the fluid a couple months ago I used Valvoline PLus 3 fluid. All he was able to find was Dexron III/Mercon. Will running this type of fluid damage my trans? Should I drain it out and go back to the Plus 3? Help!!!

TIA

Joe
Re:Trans. Fluid
I wrote a major oil company about this. This company didn't make an ATF type 3 and I was using their Dex/Merc III. They advised that you can use Dexron/Mercon to top off a Chrysler transmission but if you refill with it, you will often have hard shifts and general driveability complaints.

Re:Trans. Fluid
You could have problems with the Dexron III/Mercon...Dodge spend alot of time and money to develop ATF+3 for use with these trannys....I would advise to drain and refill with ATF+3 and maybe change the cooler lines to the 2001 style that get rid of the quick disconnect fittings

My cooler line also released going down the highway and I lost all my fluid...it cost me a rebuilt tranny and I updated my tranny cooler lines this time....good luck

ATF +3 ONLY (stock tranny) Total oil capacity with a stock tranny is 17 qts. (includes TC) For tranny oil change 4 qts. (Do not flush system !!)
Trannys other than stock check with builder or installer.

JPilaske, I don't know about the ATF +4. In my owners manual for a '98 24v (says the same for the '99) pg. 206 Selection Of Lubricant
Chrysler Automatic Transmission Fluid identified as ATF+3 or ATF+3 Type 7176 should be used to assure optimum transmission performance.

CAUTION

USING TRANSMISSION FLUIDS OTHER THAN ATF+3 MAY CAUSE DETERIORATION IN SHIFT QUALITY AND/OR TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SHUDDER

Stan

ATF+4 is Chryslers Synthetic version of the ATF+3. I was gonna buy some but it's $10.00 per quart!!
I think the 02s & 03s come with the +4 but on all older models they always recommended ATF+3 only. I think there is a TSB on this if you go to your lookup and type ATF+4. Also, Chrysler is the only place to buy ATF+4!! :-X
