Auto trans lost 1st gear

I think I'm finally starting to feel the auto trans blues. I drove the truck yesterday and it ran perfectly. I get in it this morning (40 deg) and it wouldn't shift out of first, reverse works normal. I drove it a couple of miles and it still wouldn't shift. I get back home and run it through the gears and it started shifting but would wind up very high before shifts. Get to the store thinking that maybe it just needed to warm up and now I lost 1st. I can't even use the shifter to get it in 1st gear. Shifts normal otherwise and the torque converter doesn't seem to be slipping(other than starting off in 2nd). It has 148,000 miles on it and I did check the fluid and it looked good and was full. I serviced the tranny about 10,000 miles ago. Oh yeah, I checked for codes with my Superchips and there were none.

How bad is it?

Sounds like what I just went through.
Just the opposite though, cold it would start out in 2nd, warm it would get stuck in 1st.

Take it to a transmission shop, Dealership doesn't seem to be able to do anything unless there are codes being thrown, and you're well out of any warranty, being you have over 100K on it.
Unless you can wrench on a 47RE yourself.

Governor pressure solonoid and governor pressure sensor were replaced in mine and it fixed it.

Thanks Phox. Thanks what I was hoping it was. I might try to fix it myself though. Normally I try to do something and it winds up in the shop anyway. Do you know if these are dealer only parts?

That I don't know.

I'm thinking yes, but it wouldn't hurt to try your friendly neighborhood auto parts store.

The reason these two items go bad is that you are circulating particulates from the friction material in the transmission. The particles clog up the orifices. After you change the parts, after a while they will clog up again because the frictions continue to wear. Happened to me. Then I bought an off-the-shelf ATS upgrade and never looked back.

The dealer does have them (most likely in stock). Neighborhood parts shop probably wont have them. I hit up a transmission shop to get my parts and ended up with more $$$ in my wallet because of it.

Haven't put mine in yet, so can't tell you how tough, but the service manual says it is only two more screws than changing the filter and a few plugs.

Putting mine in on Wednesday with a couple good folks from on here.

Ya'll were right. The dealer charged me $200 for the parts but now it's fixed and running good. I tried my trans shop but they are closed until next week so I had to bend over for the dealer. In hindsight I think I could do the job in 1 hour verses the 3 it took me. I tried to adjust the bands but I couldn't find the adjusting screws...oh well. Thanks again guys.

Great for you, did the same thing today to mine and she's brand new. Filter change and adjusted the bands too. Back to normal now! Special thanks to Scottsjeeprolet for the assistance and use of his lift/garage. Just followed the manual, and it was straight forward.
