1998.5 auto trans totally seems to disengage when first starting to drive from cold start.
It's been happening for a year, I just select Park then put it back in drive to start again. It can happen more than a few times.
It's nice that it snaps hard into gear on the reset. What is this? Torque converter draining of something?

Yep, sounds like TC drainback.
Try to let the truck idle in neutral for 2 minutes before starting to drive.
Do also check fluid level, sometimes this is caused by a slightly low fluid level.
You really do not want this harsh engagement when it "snaps back into gear" because all the time with no power transmitted you ran your oil pump, converter bearings, clutches etc without lubrication.

Just my 2c

Are you saying this can happen more than once while driving, but only while cold?

Or once during each cold start?
