Auto Tranny Problem on 2001

Issue - Problem shifting from 1st to 2nd - need to lift off the accelerator completly prior to it shifting into 2nd. Then It wants to down shift back into 1st if I acclerate too hard. Once I gain speed in 2nd, then it will stay in second and shift normally into 3rd....

Its currently at the Dealer who diagnosed it to need a new Valve Body and ATP - They want $1900 to repair????

Should I obtain a second opinion or go to a tranny shop?

Im not very knowledgeable about Auto Transmissions, any advice would be very appreciated...

Thanks, Matt

Go to the Tech Facts at the top of the page, and follow the procedure for resetting the APPS. If that does not solve the problem, then do a careful inspection of the throttle valve cable between the automatic transmission and the fuel pump. Those cables have two problems, the plastic ends will crack and open up when the throttle is depressed or the housing retainer clips snap off and let the housing drift loose. Either condition, on either end of the cable, will confuse the valve body and create shift problems.

The other issue that is very common is the APPS itself becomes corroded and will not issue a proper voltage to the PCM, which results in the electronic governor being confused and failing to respond properly. Do a search on cleaning the APPS and that may assist you.

If the problem persists, then drop by one of your local shops that cater to the off road and 4X4 bunch, and ask for the name of a good transmission shop. The off roaders know where they good transmission shops with reasonable rates are to be found.

I'm calling BS on your dealer - like RCW posted, it's usually either the APPS or the TV cable

I'm with the others - if something in the tranny is going south like this, I would suspect it to be the governor / solenoid!

...although a new VB is a nice thiing to have; That would run you about $450 and 3 hours of an afternoon....
