The A/C Compressor does run while the switch is in the Defrost position, even if the A/C is turned off.

The AC coolant is acting as a lube for the system. Need to circulate it to keep things happy.

Don't know if it can be done on a '04 but one of the first mods I did on my trucks was to disable the A/C in defrost. Easy mod on a 12 valve, little harder on a 24, not sure on a 3rd gen. Who needs the A/C on when it's 20 below zero?
My understanding is the A/C comes on in more than just the defrost setting in a 3rd gen. In fact I think the A/C is on all but a couple settings.

Anyway here's the disable instructions if you're interested http://dodgeram.org/tech/repair/HVAC/Defrost_AC.htm

The AC comes on on the Bi-level setting on my truck. So maybe it does on yours too?

Its my understanding that the a/c compressor runs in the defrost mode to help remove moisture from the cabin air, therefore it could be useful even @ 30*. I know when my defrost is running on a rainy/humid days it sure gets a lot of water out of the evaporator box. Hope that helps.

Like infidel, I dont need the AC coming on when it is so cold and dry (at 0 and below) that my nose is bleeding from lack of moisture.
