4x4 will not engage

I can move the lever to 4 hi and 4 low no problem...but the 4x4 light does not come on and it does not engage.

Any ideas why the 4x4 won't engage?
I checked all the vacuum lines...all are intact. I did find one with a bracket on it but the bracket was not attached to anything but it had holes for bolts and you could see where the bolts were tight up against the bracket [the bolts are MIA]...somewhere near the top of the six spd. Maybe theres a better fix then the *******.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Scotty
I found that the vacuum line near the injector pump was off and was hiding up by the TST tap.

I still do not know what that bracket is for by the tranny.
Re:4x4 will not engage

OK here we go you probably know there are two vacuum lines to the front axel that lead to a diaphram.(which slides a fork inside the axel) If you remove the lines only one should have vacuum. When you shift into 4x4 the other line should have vacuum. These lines link back to the top of the transfer case that change the the vacuum from one line to the other.
In my case I found that I did not have enough vacuum to the diaphram. I found that the hoses going to the top of the transfer case had kinda slipped off a bit but they wouldn't push back on either so I got some rubber grease and it slid on perfectly. Also I took the fork sliding ***'ly off and found that gear oil had got into the diaphram so I inverted it so that the 2 spigots for the vacuume lines pionted straigt down and I moved the fork back and forth a couple of times to get the oil/water out of the diaphram and the thing has worked fine ever since.

Hope this helps!
Mitch

Re:4x4 will not engage

My second post shows I got the vacuum leak resolved but I still am wondering what the lil bracket is for that is up by the tranny...a clip and a vacuum line is attached...the bracket is loose about 3" long and one inch wide with a 90* bend and a one inch piece that has a 45* piece cut off.
There are two holes for bolts and it shows signs of a bolt being tightened against it.

I have the same problem, I have good vacuum in both lines they suck hard on my fingers. How can you tell if you have enough vaccum and or if the diaphram is leaking? Can you reverse the vacuum lines to see if it works to make sure I have enough suction?

Thanks,
Brooks
