4x4 will not engage Help please

I have a 94 diesel 4X4 5 Speed was driving in my yard tonight and tried to put the truck in 4x4 and nothing in 4hi or 4lo. In 4hi i heard a light grinding. I dont know where to start. If any of you might know some possible problems, that would be great. thanks so much.

If i had to bet money i would say it is the actuator on the front axle. If you are not familiar it is a little vacum like thing on the axle tube on the passenger side you shouldn't be able to miss it. That is if you are getting vacum to it but these things has went out on us before. Not a big deal.

I too agree with Dezlsmker

My advise.. posi lock it and forget it! However if you must check your 4wd, the best thing to do is check all of the lines, the rubber ones will tend to crack, the easiest way to do this tho, is to check if you are actually getting vaccum at the actual actuator. Its simple, If you are getting vaccum at one of the lines (i dont member but one actually creaed a vaccum to shift out of 4wd and pull the collar away, and the other does the inverse) then it is your actuator that is screwed, it costs (last time i checked) 75 bucks from the dealership, I paid 200 for my posilock kit and have not looked back since.. Here is an honest writeup about it....

Hope this helps

Enjoy!

Are you saying 4wd is like putting the truck in neutral or just the front isn't turning?

Thanks for the reply I am starting to think it is internal in the transfercase beceause when I put it into 4x4 and let off the clutch there is a light grinding. Not good. What could the possible options for being messed up in the t-case.

How is the fluid level on the transfer case?

perhaps the internals got misaligned somehow because of lack of lubrication. I make it a habit to check my T case fluid every oil change. and change out the fluid at least once a year. When mine is a little low it grinds when i let off on the clutch as well, but when its full of fluid, i have no issues. I can honestly say, My 4WD works flawlessly (with the posilock aid of coarse).

Only problem I've experienced with these t-cases besides leaking is a broken drive chain in one rig. The owner was pulling very hard in 4 low and heard it snap.
