94 12valve...hard to start, dead misfire, loads of white smoke

Buddy of mine just called me. He lives in Oregon, so it in the upper 30's.

He has a 94 3500 12valve, with 175K miles. Went to start it up, cranked and cranked. Went started up, there is a ton of white/blue smoke, and while its running, its belching white smoke, and has a dead misfire.

The injectors are stock, delivery valves stock, Banks (i think) plate, and Piers 3K GSK, pump was replaced about 80K miles ago, has a Piers HX-35 that I put on for him about 2 years ago.

What your thoughts?? Injector died??? If so, what would be a good replacement injector set. Its not a hot-rod, but slightly more than stock would be nice.

Thanks.

I was a diesel hater when those things were out, but from my recollection when it was 30 out they all ran a little crappy and smoked. On the "miss" deal though, I would be checking the fuel psi at the inlet to the injection pump. I believe you want to see around 25. If it's low pinch off the return line (rubber on toward back of engine famous for leaking) and see if the psi comes up. That should show you that the lift pump is capable of providing psi and that the overflow valve is weak. Also make sure the heat grids are working and the the aforementioned rubber line is not cracked or weathered looking. Could be getting a little air in the system. I'm in the "learning" mode on 12 valves so hopefully Bill or someone with some more expertise in this area will chime in.

Sounds allot like slipped timing.

If it cranks and cranks and cranks,

are you getting fuel at the injectors? if not it can be ur lift pump, if so, it might be air in the system.. You might wanna check your fuel shutdown solenoid as well, check the little blue wire that goes to the battery, and if all that fails, well, sliped timing is the next most probable cause...

It sounds a lot like the rubber fuel lines are leaking or the overflow valve is not doing its job. Try going here for some help with diagnostics: Diagnostic Info

Yeah, I would say that air is definitely entering the system. How long does it take for it to smooth out? You could try manually priming it once to see if that helps it.
