05 3500 problems
Hello all,
Yesterday I jumped on a plane to go to Red Deer alberta and buy a new truck because after all the problems I have with my 92 I decided it was easier for me to buy a new truck. So I go there and he fires it up, sounds fine except for a scraping sound up front, but I couldn't see anything obvious, I asked him about the noise, he said "It's a normal noise that they all make". I should've walked right then but I took his word for it, we went for a drive and it kept making the noise. He gave me an inspection sheet of the shop it just went through for an inspection and it noted that everything was OK. So I signed on the dotted line and headed for home through a blizzard. Finally made it home at 4AM and went straight to bed. This morning I go out to look again and I saw that the back of the fan clutch had something come off and work it's way back into the timing gear cover. There are little shavings all over the place and a bit of oil too. I called the dealer up and he just said "warranty"... My question is: if this thing went right through the cover and got shavings in the engine, it's going to cause problems further on down the line but I know they're just going to put on a new fan clutch and cover and call 'er good. I want to give the truck back to the dealer because of this but they don't want to take it back, I had a lengthy discussion with them today... What kind of options do I have? Am I asking for more trouble if I keep it? THis truck has only 57000 KM on it... I'm REALLY choked at this!!! I wanted to buy a brand spankin' new one but my cashflow won't let me... Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Toby in Pemberton, B.C.

First off, the dealer (was it a Tote-the-Note lot?) that sold you the truck is either an ignoramus, scumbag or both.
The aluminum cover probably wasn't penetrated, so the repair should be simple and permanent. The oil could be from the viscous fan clutch... I recommend finding out as much as possible about the damage personally, unless you haved a service shop/dealer that you trust.
Seems like you ought to have legal recourse with the selling dealer - not sure about legalities north of the border...

If you have access to a digital camera (or an analog one) take as many pictures under different lighting of the damaged area as possible. Take an oil sample and get it checked out, keep a second sample in a sealed container (Signed and sealed) for further testing if you need to go to court.
Write down everything about the phone conversations and look to it that you do your communications in writing.
If the front cover hasn't been penetrated and the oil analysis doesn't show anything out of order I think they deserve the chance to repair the damage.
(Even though the salesman seems to be on the incompetent side about the operating sounds of these trucks)
On the bright side they did offer you to warranty it without hesitation.
Good Luck!
