I think fuel will still flow out even if the filter is plugged. Did it seem like a fuel; problem when it stalled?

lift pump maybe i know when mine in my 03 it died right away

I think you might be looking at the fuel heater?

The only other thing on the filter can is the water sensor.

Did the truck throw any codes?

04 dead in the road

Check to see if its got a code mine did it too. The code was 0191 that was for the fuel rail pressure regulator. Thats what made mine die after idling 20mins. and drove 6 miles.
