It's been nice not having to wait for the grid heaters before starting. I guess I'll be plugging my truck in before to long.

I guess I'm the newb on this one. What are grid heaters? Sorta like a glow plug for the intake? I've not had this truck long enough to go through a winter yet but, I'm working in Nebraska right now and I think I'm gonna be in for a good one.

The grid heater is located between the intake horn and the intake of the motor. It heats the incoming air to provide better cold weather starts. Cummins doesn't use glowplugs on their motors. It'll usually kick on when the air temp is below 66* F and will cycle on and off until the truck reaches 19mph IIRC.

Well you have the right truck for the weather. I see Ford and Chebby guys complaining alot about not being able to start in the cold. The Cummins seems to start pretty well. It doesn't get cold enough here to worry about it. I hardly ever cycle the grids.

I never wait for the grid heater. Why wait? Just fire it up.

In anything over about zero and in elevations lower than about 6000' in cold weather there is no starting problem with a Cummins.

If it did crank an extra second or so it would just give the oil pump that much run time before firing and help with lubing.

FYI ~ If you're wondering why the lights dim with the cycling of the grid heaters, they (there's actually two heater elements in the housing) draw 220 amps.
I'm not sure about the later trucks, but the '93 Dodge CTD alternator puts out only 160 amps, so yes, the heaters dip into the battery when running.
