Superchargers...

Explain this to me... I was told this could be done to a Diesel truck in opposition to an actual Turbo. So I wanna know what differences there would be and IF anyone has ever set one up and could we see some pictures? I'm told it can be done so I have to know if I'm being led astray again. The way I figure, it can be done but it's definately not an easy task with the engine setup like the I-6. SO yeah... I GOTSTA Kno!

Detroit done both on an engine years ago. I think turbos are more popular because of parasitic losses and a lack of reliablity.

The Roots Blower that we see on the top fuel drag racers were originally (and still are if I'm not mistaken) used to scavenge the exhaust from large 2-stroke diesels.

The 2 stroke detroits with blowers were NOT supercharged , the engines would not run without the blower, so it is still naturally aspirated.

I think what mike was getting at, is has anyone put a Roots blower on a dodge CTD, instead of a turbo?

Did you get that baby on the road yet? The belt driven blower setup ought to make some great low end torque without the big smoke scene. Are you pushing the air from the turbos threw the blower or bypassing it when boost comes up.

With gassers, the plus side of blowers is NO LAG.

A down side of blowers is HEAT -- since there's no place for an intercooler.

When I was comparing blowers and turbos, it was in the context of ricers... and in that application the blower could not match the turbo for either HP or Torque once you wound them up -- with the ones I was able to see dyno charts for.

I'm assuming blowers would tend to run hotter on CTD's, just like they did with the gassers, so I'd lean away from blowers. Of course, you might have something exotic in mind to compensate such as propane or NOX -- hardly a daily driver!

Probably why you don't see them much on the big rigs either?

Not so fast . . . . . somebody's always nailing something together.

The result of a quick Google . . . . don't know if it's any count . . . . http://www.theblowershop.com/tbsparts.html#Intercoolers

I know Gale Banks once played with a beefed-up heater type core under the blower on one of his speed boats. At the time, he was having issues with the fins being torn off the tubes. It was fed lake water.

Point taken!

That particular item is $2000 for the intercooler alone (pretty though!)

I wonder how a complete system would compare with some of the twins being discussed?

Funny, I just worked on an old Detroit in a belly pan today and it had a roots blower on it. I'll try to take a picture for you guys the next time I get near it, probably Wednesday or Thursday.

Interesting setup. I still think you can do more with a turbo setup.

This Volvo Penta has a blower and a turbo, the blower has an electric clutch, it kicks off when the turbo reaches a set boost pressure.
I rode on a boat with one of these, I would have swore it was a well tuned gasser the way it revved so fast, pretty impressive.

It does! I have now 20000miles with twins and a supercharger/blower. but because I push 84psi twin-turboboost through the blower, I had a seal problem and the rotors expand due to the heat. I'm rebuilding the blower now.
