Re:oil change poll

Been pretty good about doing it every 5K, but this last one time got away from me and I did it at 6500.

Fuel filter every other oil change, so I'll probably go closer to 4K for the next one, to get back on schedule so my 3rd fuel filter will be right at 30,000, give or take a couple.

Oil has been getting pretty black (sooty I assume) by 5K, so unless I change over to synthetic, I'll stick with it.

Re:oil change poll

Just picked up my truck Monday a week. Was wondering same questions on oil change intervals. I have been thinking somewhere between 3750 and 7500 per manual. 5000 sounds good.

Re:oil change poll

I change my oil with Amsoil at 5000 miles. Fuel filter at 10000. Air filter at 15-20000. Fleetguard filters. Oil and filters are cheap insurance IMO.

Re:oil change poll

4-5 thousand...but in all actuality Cummins doesn't realize that some of us are seriously overfueled and dump thick charcoal out our pipes ..so 3-4 thousand at best should be for the more heavily fueled trucks, and all you stockers just follow your little manuals and decide for yourself

Cummnzpowr - you know you're way overfueled when you don't just get briquettes out the tailpipe, you get the Sure-Light ones that are soaked in diesel fuel. ;D Mmmm, tasty! :P

Hmmmmm.....

Lots of personal preference here..

Amsoil every 10,000 miles...change filter and go another 5,000...123,465 so far, so good...

Re:oil change poll

Some 3rd gen folks clearly don't read the fine print in their manuals. The 3750/7500 oil change for heavy/light use IS FOR CALIFORNIA VEHICLES. If you read the little symbols down at the bottom they will explain that to you. For 3rd gen vehicles the recommendation in the manual is 7500 miles for heavy duty and 15,000 miles for light.

Contrary to what one might expect, and also due to the high sump capacity, these engines are very easy on the oil. Those who do oil sampling realize this. If you're using synthetic oil like Amsoil or Delvac 1 on a 3rd gen, 10-20k between changes is not unreasonable at all. I read above of someone dumping Delvac1 at 5k and thats the most ridiculous waste of money I've ever heard. Might as well be using $5/gal Delvac 1300 at those drain intervals. OH well, some folks like to throw away their money

Why is it that discussion about oil seem to cause so much friction?
DD4x4 is right, keep it under control or this, like many other oil threads in the past, will be locked.

Thanks everyone.
Rich.

Re:oil change poll

With my 500/1000 mile oil changes, I buy the cheapest, of cheapest wallyworld, bluelight special, discontinued stuff.

But, I'm dumping so much un-burned fuel, and literally pieces of soot out the tailpipe at WOT, it's not normal.

I have noticed a difference in my 24V, and 12V with oil change intervals. I changed my 24V with high mileage,, one time going to 20,000 miles before changing it, and my 12V get's them so foten, it's silly, but my 12V, even running double the boost, 1/3 more RPM, and insane timing, the 12V sounds healthier, less noise on startup, and smoother running (all RPM).

Just My $.02

Man you guys are sensitive!!LOL!!
You want to see wars look at some of the ATV forums at the Honda vs Yamaha battles!!!!!
This is the most civil, easy going site I've ever seen!!

Oil changes shouldn't start wars, it's all a matter of prefrences, I'm new to diesels & I always changed oil every 3000 miles on my gas engines & it paid off (250,000 miles on a 69 Dodge Adventurer with 318 V8 & when we took it apart there was no sign of sludge & no ridge reamer was needed to to remove the pistons) so for now I'll spend a bit more & change oil every 5000 miles in my oil burner till I have the oil checked & can see with my driving style that I can go longer safley.

Re:oil change poll

I change mine every 5K. Another factor that should be considered is fueling mods. It would make sense to me to change more often if the HP has been increased as the engine has to work harder.
