I'd take rebuildable too. I have all the ancillary pieces to build a proof of concept two stroke, four stroke, just need an engine...
I would use my 5.9 but there is a very good chance I could hurt it.

All TDI's are... as in Turbocharged Direct Injection!
The AAZ 1.9L turbo's were IDI though, as well as all the 1.6L I think before that. But the 1.9L TDI's (and the 2.0L TDI in the 04-05 Passat, plus the new common rail 2.0L TDi) will do! I think they started in 94?
Uh, I think the OM606 found in the late 90's Mercedes and before were all IDI. I want to say that starting in 2000 when they went to the newer body design, those I6 and v6 CDI's were direct injection. If it's a CDI it definately is.
I'm guessing you don't want to afford a newer CDI engine. I know the OM606 turbo engines up to 1999 sell pretty well since they were a nice engine!

I would say find a tractor junk yard, better yet look for a combine. They will most likely be in the scrap yard because they burnt, most with low hours and a very good engine. Only 2 speeds in one of those, idle and wide open!
Or try these guys, they will ship anywhere and have been decent to deal with.

Check along any of the interstates for old used Carrier Transcold and Thermo King Reefer units that hang on the front of reefer trailers, everything now has to be EPA compliant so there are a lot of old units laying around, they contain a complete refrigeration system and include diesel engine, cooling system, compressor, alternator all in one package. I have seen rows and rows of these right off the freeways out here is Southern California also look for old diesel forklifts. Some of the transit coaches that I have worked on have 4 cylinder Perkins and Diesel Kiki engines to run the air conditioner units.

Yup, my little ZB600 Kubota came off a Thermo King unit. Heck of a nice little unit with an attached radiator, fan, and alternator like Jim said....
Over 25 years old and not touched in 10, sitting outside in the elements the whole time. Jump the glow plugs for 15 seconds and bump the starter, it started right up untill it ran out of the fuel still in the cut fuel line!

Thanks. I will give them a call. I need a decent sized 4 or small 6.

IH made a 239 and a 246 inch 4 cylinder with or without turbo, used in the 5,6,7 and 884 utility tractors. Case used them in the 85 series after they bought out IH, as well as in the 4230 and 4240 utilities, too. With the right plate bolted to the back of the engine you can bolt up just about any transmission you want.
