Junkyard available direct injection diesel engine?

I'm looking for a cheap but decent DI engine I can do some testing with. Any ideas for candidates?

what kind of testing? how big?

2.2L Isuzu's found in 84-85 S-10's and Chevettes were direct injection I believe, but pretty hard to come by. Might be more easily found in some NPR delivery trucks. I'm pretty sure the little 600cc 2 cylinder Kubota I have from a truck reefer is DI also...

Go to a tractor junk yard. Any older small Massey Ferguson diesel farm tractor (i.e. model number 35, 135, 150, 165, and the 200 series tractors will have a nice little 3 cylinder diesel, a few even with a turbo). I remember abusing the hell out of those little tractors when I was younger. They're tough, reliable, and the little Roosa-Master pump will throw enough fuel to make 'em smoke like a little freight train if you want. Ahhhh...I miss those days

I don't know how to even find a tractor junkyard anywhere near here. Sounds like just what I am looking for though....

I had one of those 2.2L Isuzu's in my grandfathers old 84 S-10 running great.... dad gave it away when I was at sea I'm almost positive they are DI.

My Uncle drove it for years and was able to squeek mid 50mpg's. They made stock turbo models too in probably the delivery trucks. I would love to find one to swap into a small 4x4 pick-up. VERY hard to find certain parts sadly... but then again, that was back in the day before the internet was at our household....

Actually the Isuzu diesel engines in the 84-85 S-10 and 81-86 Chevette are indirect injection. The pickup used the C223 2.2 liter and the car used the 4FB1 1.8 liter. I own four of the C223 engines, three in vehicles and one spare in the garage and used to own a Chevette diesel that didn't have a title and I never did get on the road. You really would have to try the medium duty cabover trucks, as all there powerplants were a DI diesel (similar to the Cummins 4BT in size). But the bad thing about them is paying for them, as I think you'd probably spend more then what you'd want for an experiment. You could also try a D201 Isuzu engine, which was primarily used in ThermoKing refrigeration units. I believe it's about a 2.0 liter engine and is direct injection and every one I've seen had an inline injection pump. Good luck.

Thanks for the correction. I guess I assumed they were the same engine in the NPR's and the S-10 based on displacement.

Ya, sadly people know about those NPR trucks... I was looking into buying one and they do command a little bit of a premium since people like them for swaps. Just like 4bts... heck some 4bt's are selling for more than 6bt's, even without turbos!

MOST 4BT's sell for more than first gen 6BT's primarily because there are less of them out there compared to the huge numbers of first gen engines from 89 - 93.
