If the turbine housing glows orange...
how high are EGT's do you think?
At my job we use Cat 3121 (I think thats the number) engines for pumping purposes (frac pumps). Sometimes after running them hard the turbine housings will glow orange. I know that can't be good.. I was told that it is normal and happens all the time... ummm...

In his imagination, maybe... even with a glass turbine housing, the wheel will be spinning at 100,000RPM+ and would look like a solid object. Think about your engine's radiator fan chuckin' along at idle speed.
There's the impeller speed. Then there's the fact that steel can't be heated enough to be clear. Unless you're Superman but then you could also see through cold steel, too.

I have seen a dmax after market turbo that could be seen from the front wheel well glow bright orange during a sled pull. I don't know what temps are bad for those larger diesel plants but I would guess it's around 2000*

I once got the exhaust manifold on my old dodge slant 6 so hot it was glowing and you could actually see the walls of the manifold that were perpendicular to what you were looking at through the side you were looking at, hard to explain, but in short it actually did made the iron translucent.
