Identifying a N14

Im looking at some truck VIN# and the trucks are 1500 miles away, But Im trying to figure out What it means about the engine when the 8th digit is a (C) This truck is a year 2000 freightliner and has only 48,713 Original miles on the cummins. / Another has a (A) for 8th digit and it has 181,969 miles on it also a 2000 freightliner. Does anyone know what this means? And how will I recognize a N14 cummins? They have quiet a few of these trucks. Id like one with a decent engine. Most of the Trucks with the Cats, and Detroit's have around 300,000 on them. I recently Obtained my CDL and Im wanting to build a Truck conversion Camper for myself. The rest I may bring home and sale them at a fair price. California market is saturated with these older trucks. They cant sale them there period. They will go to auction if someone doesn't buy them. I think they would sale here if the price is fair and the truck is solid. Mostly Fl70/ and FLD 120's.

... F02175 comes up as a 215hp/520lb ft Cummins ISB in a FL70 Chassis. Fuller FS5406A Trans and a 19k single rear axle w/ 4.11. It may have been modified since it was built but I doubt it has an N14 in it.

Hope this helps.

Hey thanks man, No it hasn't been modified. I know the original Owner, Its a flat bed on back. I wonder what kind of mileage it would get, just approximately I mean. with this transmission and rear end under it. Hey and where do you guys go to get all this info? Is it a website or something?

Well, since it isn't an overdrive, unloaded it should run 8-10 MPG probably? Essentially it is just a bigger truck running the same 5.9 we have, though I would guess it is a 24 valve.

How can I look up these Vin Numbers and get all this info like these other guys. What is it a carfax report or something? Software? Im trying to learn how to do it for myself. Yes Im guessing a 24 valve but without any smog devices on it. I was thinking it might get around 12 to 14 miles to the gallon. Its just a empty flat bed. Wouldn't 8 to 10 miles to gallon be like something a 40 foot motor home gets? This truck only has 50,000 miles on it. I have to fly to cali, then drive it home. That's why I have so many questions. The prices are very reasonable right now.

I am assuming carbuff works at a truck dealership, where he has access to factory info like the Dodge guys can with a VIP summary.

I think 12 to 14 is very optimistic, unless you want to run very slow, you would have to keep the RPMs down to 1800 or so, and without OD, that means spending a lot of time in the slow lane.

I almost always drive in the slow lane, and with a Truck Camper you supposed to stay under 55 miles anyway according to the Lance Website. Hey Thank you Sir.

I think the Fuller FS5406A Mentioned above is a 6 speed isn't it? Which should make it a overdrive if I am thinking right.

Train Ride to Los Angeles was great, Truck was a little trooper all the way back to Oklahoma, Did exceptionally well on fuel. I don't have the exact numbers because all the diesel pumps did not offer receipts. It was so good though that by the time I got in to Arizona I was calling the Original owner because I thought surely the fuel gauge was broken. When I stopped near Needles California I was able to squeeze 8 gallons in one tank and less than 20 in the other. It has 2 45 gallon tanks and I guess it uses from Both at the same time because there doesent apper to be a way to switch tanks. Next stop was Williams Arizona where I camped on my newly purchased property near the Grand Canyon and drove around 2 days between the canyon/ flagstaff/ and the property. When I left Williams I filled up for around $150 however much that bought? And drove from there to Amarillo Texas where the hose only reached one tank so I filled it and drove home to Tishomingo Oklahoma and still had fuel. Leaving Amarillo The truck finally rolled over to 50,000 miles and was eating up highway. After I sale the enormous commercial compressor off the back this should be an excellent camper hauler with its 25 foot flatbed and all the locking truck boxes the original owner had mounted down both sides. I want to thank all the people of this forum who offered advise and detailed information about these trucks, because this was my first cross country trip in a Semi truck. Im now gearing up for the next truck, Thanks a lot Guys for all the inputs and advise.
