More power from N14
we have a 2000 Freightliner Century class, and I believe its at the stock 370 hp, is there any way to get to 435hp, or even get more HP without going through a programmer/computer? Top speed is fine, its just that it really could use that extra ummff on the hills. I know my chances are slim without Freightliner/Cummins turning it up-just thought id ask.
BTW, it only revs to 1650 rpm or so, even if we can get it to rev a tad higher it would help out.

is the fan engine driven? you can (i believe) set the fan to turn off at certain times. that fan draws a ton of power and will bog down the engine, that may give you a few more rpm under load. i have an N14 here, but it is in a crane used as a powerplant diesel. and is mechanically injected.

Sadly , your going to have to put a chip in it ( highly illegal , don't let dot catch you with it) or any big rig shop can turn it up with their laptop. come on up to my place and i can do it for you.

The only way that I know of is to have a dealer with access to Cummins software turn it up for you. I don't think it costs very much, $200-300.00 range.

Unless it's on warranty.......or you can talk the shop guys on doing you firefighters a "favor". I mean, who wouldn't want firefighters getting to their house faster.

It is illegal because the EPA says it is illegal , and the DOT cares because the EPA says it is illegal. Every modification that people here on DTR do is basically illegal , it can and does change emissions output of our vehicles.
We had messages posted at work that we were to notify our supervisor immediatly if such aftermarket performance devices were found on trucks , if we didn't , and someone else found it , it was our job on the line, they are THAT serious about it.

Its in a 2000 Freightliner Century Class. Im not familiar with how they can program them, but at say 1700 rpm or so in 10th, it runs 75-78 mph, which is what my dad wanted top speed set on it. So im not sure how or what they did, all i know is in 10th gear flat on the floor I can run 75-78 all day long until I hit a hill, then a good handfull of trucks are going right past, its like you need 9th to rev a little higher, or 8th, whatnot. 10th at 1700 is abot 75, whereas 9th right against the gov is about 50-55.
Im guessing that going from the 370 to 435 will give her some more spit in 10th, not making it fall down as much with 48k on. All filters are new.
But there is a fault code at startup that says something about Fault code #1 or something like that.

The fault code #1 could be in any system on that truck not just the engine. The ecm on that truck can be changed to set your top rpms per gear if wanted. You are going to have to go to a shop with the cummins program to change your rpms. Does the sticker on the engine say two different horsepowers? If it does all the shop has to do is change it in the computer to whatever one you want. If it only shows one horsepower then the only thing you can change is the rpm up to the governed speed of the engine. If you have any other questions about that truck pm me. I work on a fleet of 65 century class trucks every day.

What you want is more torque. Torque gets you up the hill, horse power will get you to the hill faster.
You can't put a "chip" in a N-14. It's not like the 5.9 so don't listen to the DOT scaredy cats. The only way to get more horses out of a N-14 is to change the settings in the ECM. You can get a lot of horse power out of one of those engines. I've seen 1200 hp and 2800 ft lbs. of torque in a race truck. I doubt it will hold together very long at those settings.
Since you stated the truck tops out RPM wise at 1700, I'd bet the top RPM has been set to limit the top speed. There are a couple of different ways to limit the top speed and RPM on a N-14. You can set the top speed, top cruise speed, top RPM, and you can set progressive shift where different gears have different top RPM's.
In case you don't know, a N-14 generates it's top torque at around 1200 RPM's. Increasing the top speed won't help you climb the hills very much. You might hit the bottom a little faster, but until the truck reaches the magic 1200-1500 RPM range, it won't start pulling at it's peak.

All our trucks with N-14's will go up to 2100 rpms. You can see what the top rpm limit is with the a scanner. Know of anyone with a ProLink? You may have a fuel restriction if your limit isn't 1650. As far as chips go, look into Pittsburgh Power, if I remember right they can get another 125 hp out of N-14, but it would be cheaper if you can get Cummins to rerate it.
