General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Great book..The diesel odyssey of...

Just finished reading one of my Xmas presents..

The book title is "The diesel odyssey of Clessie Cummins" written by Lyle Cummins (his son)..

It is an interesting story about his life, many adventures and how many times we almost didn't have the engines we now love..

Also goes into how Bosh began manufacturing our fuel system and the most interesting part is that the Jacob brake is actually a Cummins design that the company rejected after he left..

Great reading!!!

Gerry

Yeah, I think I paid $40 for mine.

Mike, the book stall at Rough & Tumble usually has a couple copies, that's where mine came from.

Umm! Is his son's name really Lyle Cumming?
Just joining the "No "G" in Cummins crowd!

Lyle Cummins

Call him at 503-694-5353 and order it direct. $39.95? I think. He'll even autograph it for you. Got one for my dad for Christmas that way.

The one I've seen is called "My days with the Diesel". All about Clessie Cummins and the development of the Cummins diesel. Could that be the same book?

"My Days With the Diesel"

"My Days With the Diesel" was an autobiography written by the ORIGINAL Clessie Lyle Cummins. "The Diesel Odyssey" is a biography written more recently by Clessie Lyle Cummins, Jr. I haven't read the first one. The second one is a very good book. I just finished reading it and "The Engine That Could" which is history of the first 75 years of the Cummins Engine Company. It's out of print but I found a used copy on Amazon.

Man! Lyle Cummins must have been a prolific writer of engine books..! I remember reading a thick one that was entitled "Diesel's Engine, Volume 1" (as in RUDOLPH Diesel). All the early development, licensing, wartime shenanigans(WW1&2) etc.. LOTS of excellent dwgs photo's and woodcuts of B-I-G engines... None of the modern stuff.. I don't think he ever got around to writing Volume 2.. Too bad...
