Utility bodies
Utility bodies
Why is it that dodge seldom puts out a utility body on their 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. You see the chevys and fords all over the place and see one or two dodges once in a while?
Anyone know?

I doubt the Fords and Chevys come from the factory with these bodies . They probably have them added at the dealer . The thing is Ford and GM would turn out cab/chassis so customers wouldn't have to pay for a bed they were just going to remove . Dodge makes a cab/chassis now but from what I understand it's made to take a 10 ft. body and has less power than the pickups .
I think the torque rating is right up there with the pickups BTW , and the CC models do have the 6.7 also.
From 1997-2003 , dodge did not offer a CC model , so that is why you don't see too many on the roads , i think they will become more popular, removing the pickup bed and putting a service body on s pickup also voided the warranty.
I think Dodge should add a sleeper berth and hauler body option for the cab chassis . Add aluminum wheels , dual alumin fuel tanks , and dual stacks if the particulate filter could work with that . I've seen dually crew cabs with stretched frames to add a sleeper . A single cab with sleeper makes much more sense .
try "brand f/x,they have a web site .bowie industries on the other hand does not.they both have plants here in iowa that only make service bodies.i know f/x gets the c/c units from a dealer in town but bowie will take whatever you bring em and put the service body on it for you.they will then take your bed and sell it.they usually have 8-10 boxs there to choose from
we had to switch from dodge to chevy at work.. It has to do with the hydroformed frame.. Can't bolt to it.. to hard for the utility body maunfacturers to attach them..
ALso something else about the frame configuration.. DC really dropped the ball on the 3rd gens with this one..

K7R truck and equipment in alberta is offering the new C&C trucks in reg cab with an 11' service body mounted. I think the whole idea of not being able to mount a body, is not being willing to build a body that mounts.
Most service bodies that I see, bolt to the rear bumper holes in the frame, and then use U-bolts on the front end, or else tabs that allow mounting to existing frame holes. All that I have seen so far, also use contoured wooden spacers between the somewhat less than flat frame, and the flat bar rails on the service body.
The lack of C&C option from Dodge was a major reason for the lack of utility trucks. That, and the fact that with DOT regs, 3500's are simply not "heavy" enough to carry the load legally. Ford and GMC both put out heavier, 4500 and 5500 series trucks, with high enough GVW to pass a scale. That being said, I know of several companies running 550's with 13' service bodies, that still cannot pack all the tooling they require, and be able to cross a scale.
When is too much enough?
Who knows.

The 2nd gen C&C trucks are real cool in that they set much higher than a normal truck. The 2wd versions use the solid front axle and coil spring setup just like a 4x4, but the axle is a "dummy" axle rather than a drive axle and there obviously is no transfer case. There were 4x4 C&C trucks through 2002 also, and they sat exactly the same as the 2wd C&C trucks, but had a live front axle.
These trucks are everywhere around here. The hay hauler and horse people use them to pull.
I talked to a dealer that sells utility bodies in Medford Oregon, and he said it was illegal to put a body on the newer crew cabs, said that the frames break right behind the cab!!. I sure was disappointed to find that out after being set on the Cummins engine. I've been thinking about how to install my utility bed off my 73 Chev, using a custom made flat bed, so I can remove it and put my 11.5' camper on.
