Hey 74 dart. I think it could be your HPOP or FICM. If you have access to the Auto Enginuity it could help you out a little more in resolving it. I have it and Im outside of Jacksonville by Burgaw.
It's a 6.oh no, best bet is it's ready to commit suicide, jk. Start with an oil change, I know the old 7.3's would get a goofy idle sometimes with old oil, also would look at the HPOP, FICM, or maybe an injector problem. Good luck. If all else fails, maybe it needs a Destroking.

I could be a injector. Is it a early build 03 (built Jan to Mar) They had injector problems in those models and recalled the injectors back from the dealers, but if they where installed in the truck, you where out of luck. I had a early 03 that Ford ended up buying back. Every time I had a injector fail, I would argue to replace the rest, but they would refuse. Anthony
Like lanwangeek stated the early 6.0 had real bad injectors(C94) i think. They were replaced with C95 injectors. If the oil level in the crankcase rises then there are bad O rings in the injectors.
A SCT with custom tunes can tur the EGR off in the computer.

Rough Idle Bad Injectors
I have been through this all too many times. Bring it for a diagnostic to be done when the engine is completely cold. Leave it there overnight and have them start it up in the morning. I am sure you will find several bad injectors. If it is not under warranty, I would advise changing them yourself, unless that is over your mechanical abilities. The injectors themselves cost 220 dealer cost with core exahcnge and I can't imagine what the labor is. If you are lucky, they will be on the driver side because it is easier to get to. If you are really lucky, only a glow plug or two will be out and not the injectors. I would have it checked soon. Michael.
