The increased demand for diesel fueled vehicles in Europe and China is part of the reason for higher diesel prices . But because of different refining processes diesel is cheaper than gasoline in Europe .

Whoever says that diesel is scarce because Europe is using more of it has no clue on what's real.
Europe has been using diesel vehicles for decades, they've been at a 80% diesel and 20% gas

I have read, a few years back, that Europe made a decision to get away from gasoline and push drivers to diesel because of it's efficiency. Gasoline usage has stsrted to decline over there and diesel use has risen. So they get more diesel vehicles and we get ethanol (stupid Flexfuel).

They're finally going to start selling TDIs and MBenz diesels here in CA this summer!! Not sure how well they'll sell now... I bet the people in Europe wish they could drive gassers but drive diesel for savings.
