Do I need to change the oil (6 months)?
I hadn't been putting many miles on the truck and I'm nowhere near putting 5 thousand miles on in the past 6 months (more like 2 or 3 thousand). Can anyone give me a good reason to change the oil? I always run the truck up at operating temp for a while before parking it. Current oil is John Deere conventional.

With so few miles on the oil I would say to send in an oil sample and see what the TBN number to know if the oil is still good to use for a longer time. I would think that JD oil would hold up for a full year but the only way to know for sure is by getting an oil sample tested.

I think you are good for "at least" a year. Then change it.....or before if you hit 5k.
How do you like the John Deere oil? Do you know the weight rating on it and if it's CI-4+ or CJ blend? I may be switching to it when my current stock of Rotella 5w40 CI-4+ is depleted. ( I have about a years supply on hand)

I've only run conventional Rotella and John Deere. I cannot tell a difference but I switched because the JD is CI.

That is why I switched from regular Rotella to Syn Rotella. The conventional had become CJ blend and the Syn was still CI-4+. But now it has switched too, unless you can get lucky a find a few old gallons on the shelf. I just found 9 gallons recently and snatched them up.
I may switch to JD after I run out of Rotella Syn. I hope they make it in a 5w40...especially now with the chilly nights.....it helps the cold starts.
