diesel fuel pump leaks

I'm new to diesels with my 2003 SLT Quadcab and notice that just about every dieel fuel pump I handle leaks. Hardly ever noticed that on gas pumps. Is diesel fuel more viscous or something?? Anyone know why this is?

Us diesel guys ain't as picky as the Gasser-folks.

I keep a box of surgical gloves under the back seat and pull one on before grabbing the pump handle.

Compared to gas, diesel takes forever to evaporate. Any leaks or drips just hang around instead of drying up. Most of the fuel you see on the handle is fuel that's run back off the outside of the nozzle when it's hung up after pumping. An el cheapo pair of engineer gloves works nice - I use a worn-out pair from work.

Re:diesel fuel pump leaks

I've had the CTD for 13 months now and still haven't encountered a dirty pump handle - at least no more than a gas pump handle. Haven't had a need for a glove at all.

I knew the air was dry in Colorado, but it must be worse than I realize.

Sissy's. I just grab it and go. Been doing it for 2, almost 3 years now and I ain't had a problem yet. Only problem I've had is that on one pump, the automatic shut off valve didn't work and it ended up flowing all over my truck. >

Re:diesel fuel pump leaks

Well you guys all must live in some country club - I come across grimy diesel pumps all the time. No your hand doesn't fall off but it stinks like diesel the rest of the day. I just grab one of the shop towels they have by the windshield washing squeegees and grab the handle with that. Free and easy. You'd be amazed at the black lines or grime that come off on the paper towel sometimes. Also look down, sometimes there is a leaking pump and if you step in the fuel it can get slippery on clutch pedals etc!
