Decisions decisions.....

For now I am stationed overseas and looking to come back stateside. I have about a year to save for a truck. I am really having trouble deciding what I want. I know now since owning a CTD that is what I want, but what year? I keep hearing about disatified customers fuel economy wise about the 08. My 99 was terrible, but it had an automatic and 4:11's. If any of you could start over knowing what you know now what would you invest your money into? Why?

Personally, I really like my '06 (see sig). I would buy another one (if fuel were cheap)!

I have not driven others, but it really depends on what you want to spend. Keep in mind, from what I've read, you can buy an older 12V truck and get RWHP/TQ close to what the 05/06 model years put out.

I would suggest reading through the forums. It sounds like time is on your side, right now. Take advantage of it.

I had a 95 2500 auto. Now I have a 02 2500 auto.
I wish I still had the 95, it got a little better mileage and torqued better.

If this truck is going to be driven a lot on the highway, I would get one of the 3rd gens with the g56 or nv5600. They are much quieter and don't tend to have as many front end problems. For the people that like plug and play, these can do that.

If you really like wrenching and don't feel that you need something as refined, I would get a 2nd gen 12V. Being someone that doesn't trust electronics, I really like the fuel system on the 12Ver. You also don't need to have special diagnostic software to work on them if you do your own work.

I have only owned two 12 valves and can only comment from that perspective. The first was a 95 with 3.50 gears and an automatic. The timing was advanced and a GSK was added and the tranny rebuilt. It got 22-23 mpg average. It didn't tow well in my opinion so I got the truck I have now. It is bone stock, has 4.10 gears and can pass a car while towing , something I couldn't think about doing with the 95 without getting a good run at it. The down side is it averages 15 mpg and drops to 13 on winter fuel. In hindsite I would have kept the 95 because the fuel prices have gotten completely out of control. If I were to buy another truck I would look for a 12 valve 1 ton 4x4 with 3.50 gears and a ATS or Goerend transmission or a 5 speed, or 6 speed conversion. That will be the next truck I buy. I think the 95 (or any truck with 3.50 gears)would have towed better had I bumped up the h.p. which is very easliy done, but you have to have the tranny to hold the h.p. The 12 valve (from what I read on hear) can be bumped up to 300-350 h.p. with some fairly easy modifications to the injection pump and larger injectors. My 2 cents.

After reading the $7 a gallon thread I don't know if I want any vehicles. Geez. I may as well buy an older Toyota 22R 4x4 and enjoy the good gas mileage. With my experiance in alternative fuels mileage doesn't increase. It decreases actually. If you were Dino before Bio you had trouble for a while with crud breaking loose and glogging things up. Then in the winter you better cut it with kerosene or it will freeze. Our service station pump filters were bad for clogging too.

Do any of you have other experiences with your cummins and bio fuels? Did your mileage increase or decrease?

I only like 12v's. No electronics, emissions junk, or fuel system problems associated with it.

I dynoed 322 hp, 788tq with some light pump mods , intake , and exhaust. I am still using stock injectors and turbo, and i have the smallest of the pumps , the 160.
