Code Readers

I'm still looking for my cummins truck, so I'm not sure what I will end up with yet a 12V or 24V

I have read a lot about error codes on trucks, is this only with the 24V computerized system or does the 12V also put out codes that can be read by a reader.

What are the code readers, brands, costs. I have seen some universal style but don't know if they are for the Dodge.

If I find a 24V I may purchase a code reader before to find out my self what codes it has.

Thanks
