Will a code reader let me view engine parameters like boost pressure, oil temp, EGT, etc while the truck is running on the road? If so, which brand should I be looking for?

I'm going to leave my truck stock and I don't want to go to the trouble of installing permanent gauges but I'd like something that let me see the values so I can understand what "normal" readings are supposed to be for future reference. I'd only be hooking the code reader up occassionally - not leaving it on all the time unless there is a super easy semi-permanent answer to adding gauges.

 

I'm pretty new to the whole diesel thing and I've had a few problems with the check engine light coming on. I invested in an Innova scanning device that I bought from Kragen Auto Parts ($120 w/ a $30 rebate through 24OCT). I believe that there is one that they sell for about $300 that gives live parameters. You might want to go check it out.
