cleaning engine compartment

Guys,
Like alot of you my darn breather bottle decided to coat my engine in oil. and i was wondering the best way to clean it i know i could go in with some degreaser but the pure amount of oil is considerable. and i am a little sceptical about using a pressure washer. so was wondering what methods you gents used to cure this messy situation.

Thanks
Marty

I have good luck using some of the orange/citrus type cleaners. Citrusolve is what I get. Just put it in a spray bottle and wait a while then just lightly hose it down. A word of caution using some of them undilluted could cause paint damage so go easy first.
Works great in the washer for really nasty greasy cloths also.

Is there any reason you couldnt use Gunk Engine Bright? It is made to degrease engines.

As for me... I get the lil' pressure washer out on work it slow and easy and watch that I don't shoot the electrical connections hard.

Any way you do it... It a B___H to clean the front of the motor. So take your time and work it out over several weekends...

Since we are on the subject, how do you go about re-routing/extending the breather hose to prevent future messes like this? I've heard guys saying they've done this, but no real instructions/examples yet. Any idears?

Hose Extension

I took off the OEM hose from the engine housing and took it to a hardward store. I bought a connector that would fit into that and about 3 feet of hose for the other end of the connector. I believe it is 3/4 inch hose. Then I remounted the OEM end of the hose to the engine housing and threaded the remaining hose down toward the ground. I have it tied to a cross member.

I guess from what others have said that it is best to NOT put this entension hose in a position where it might freeze in the winter. That would back up the oil vapors and blow gaskets.

Hope this helps.
