Cleaning the engine and compartment

Its looking like a CAT engine, time to clean it. What needs to be kept dry ? Only maybe I can think of is the alternator.
Im going to use soap and water, and degreasser only where it is needed.

I sprayed simple green all over the whole engine and washed it off the the garden hose. I let it sit over night so that way I would damage anything by spraying cold water on a hot part.

How is that simple green ? They make it sound like a wonder solution.
