Buying New Truck
Can anybody please tell me how it all works when say an Oregon or Montana resident buys a truck out of state(Idaho) ? Also, if you walk in to the dealership and pay cash for said vehicle do they just take your DL# and hand you the bill of sale an the title right then and there ? Or do they mail the title to you at your home address ?
Do you know how long it takes for the dealership/bank/manufacturer to send it to you ? Who actually sends it to you ? Once you have the title in your hand and say you decide to sell said vehicle what do you have to do ?. Just sign the back of the title and write out a bill of sale for the person buying it ?
In OR it is quicker if you can talk the dealer into letting you handle the DMV stuff yourself. Have them fill out the paperwork then send it off yourself. Most dealers take there sweet time sending it off which is the cause of most of the delay. When you sell it a bill of sale and signed title is all you need.

The dealership has a manufacturer's statement of origin. If you buy the vehicle in your home state, they send that to DMV for you to apply for a title. If you pay cash for a new vehicle out of your state, they may give you the statement of origin to take to DMV, along with a temp permit.
When I bought mine, I priced the Idaho place, then priced the local dealer... who was within pocket change of the same price. That made it simple.

I live in WA and bought in ID. They collected WA sales tax and sent the paperwork to WA DMV for me and I don't recall if they asked me how I wanted it handled. Regardless if you pay cash you will not get the title at the time of the transaction as the title is issued by the state of registration. There can be a 2-6 week wait to get the title as it should be the same time wait as the state registration.
As Jeff says if the local dealer can come close then go through them. I know a guy that tried to do it as Jeff did but then the local dealer started trying to sell the guy an SLT trim truck for the price he could get the Laramie for. The local dealer was off by several thousand dollars and it was not the same equipped truck.
