General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Wow, I can't wait to see these on the road. It doesn't sound like they are making a lot of changes to these engines which is good.

Actually the 273 and the 318 share the same block but the 340 and 360 have thicker castings between the cylinder walls. If you ask any drag racer who has tried to bore out a 318 to 340 they will tell you that you will blow out the cylinder walls. Thats why my high comp 318 was only bored .030. I found that out in the Hayes repair manual.

Here's an interesting picture over at Allpar.

A wolf in sheeps clothing or a single screw tractor under a sheet.

I know that a 340 and 318 are different blocks. I was just talking from a design standpoint, not from executing that design. I'm not saying for a second you could bore a 318 to 340, and I'm sorry if I implied that.

I had an old Poly 318 that could be safely bored to .100 over! That is like a 340 that's .030 UNDER-- very nice little combo.

Techinically, a 340 and 360 are different blocks as well because the main bearings on the 360 are bigger.

You can make a cheap small block mopar stroker with a 360 crank cut down to 318/340 size and some custom pistons (which are cheap from Speedomotive). You end up with a 318 stroked into a ~350-- nice little engine.
