WMO question
WMO question
what kind of motor oil do most people run for WMO? does it really matter or can you run basically any WMO? the reaoon i ask is because i have access to a large amount of aeroshell motor oil but its straight 30W. a company that rents a bay from my dads work drains it from there helicopters often and is always rushing to find a place to take it. they take it for now to the truckin place across the street ot burn in their heaters but iwanted to know of i can run that. i also want ot know of you have to filter it before putting it in your tank? and do u have to upgrade anything fuel wise to run it? like lines, filter, anything? for now i run a stock size fuel filter. i also want to know if u can mix oils in the tank like 5 30w and lets say 10 30w or 15 40w??
any answers will help!!

From what I've heard, it doesn't really matter what kind of oil it is. Motor oil, gear oil, 10W40, 30W, 80W90, it all burns the same. Just be sure it doesn't have water in it and that it's been filtered. Oh, and be prepared to change your fuel filter a little more frequently and get nasty looks from Prius drivers who object to your smoke!
Oh, and dino oil is better than synthetic.

If you think you're going to get "the" answer for safest ratio here (or anywhere), you'll be disappointed. No, let me correct myself... the SAFEST percentage to run is 0%. That way, nothing that breaks can be blamed on WMO.
Everyone has an opinion; I've gone as high as 80%. Cummins' manuals used to allow 5%.
I use 10 micron and 2 micron spin-on cannister filters and a cheap Harbor Freight 1" clearwater pump to pull the WMO through the filters. Works great, runs great. I usually mix 5 or 7 gallons of WMO (if I've got it) with 25 gallons or so of B100.
The only downside has been the smell.

StinkinDiiesel,
that 1" harbor freight clear water pump looks like a good deal about 40 bucks, can't beat that, does the pump have threaded ports or how do you hook up your lines to the pump and the filters, any pics or parts list would be helpful Thanks

It's got 1" threaded ports, and I cobbled up a manifold with 2 filterheads on it out of 1" copper pipe and fittings. I'm and ugly solderer, and my soldered joints are ugly as well. The manifold is copper, the rest is 1" sched 40 PVC cuz I'm cheap. I pull out of the barrel, through the filters, through the pump, and back into the barrel- the "in" pipe is against the side, pointed so it makes a whirlpool. The pickup is at the bottom center. I let a 50 gallon batch filter and recirculate for about 2 hours before I'll pump any into the fuel tank.
BTW, the last time I bought one, they were $25.95. I've got 3 on the processor, WMO filtering Goldberg, and finished bio transfer pump, and none has gone bad in the last 3 years. I've plugged the processor's pump with bits of fried breading, beaks and feet and such, but you just pull the impeller housing and knock the crud out.
As far as a parts list goes, I just stood in the aisle at Lowes drawing diagrams of the schematic in the air and generally making the other customers nervous. I wound up with a coffee can full of extra fittings, which is a nice change as I usually end up making a second trip for just one more 90* elbow or something.

Some of us are using 1 micron bag filters and pouring the oil into the filter and let it drain into a clean container. I filter the oil three times before putting into the tank.

I added another step to the cleaning. Just received a .5 micron bag filter that I will use for the final filtration before pouring into the tank. My process is to cycle the WMO three times through a 1 micron filter and then the .5 micron.
Approaching 200 miles on my first batch of WMO and running great on a 50/50 mixture of Delo 400 and Mobil 1. 2 gallons total.
