does anyone burn hydraulic oil?

i have got an almost unlimited supply of it, working for john deere, but still a little leary to run it. i have been burning wmo for quite sometime, and looking at the MSDS, they look to be close to identical. a ran a little of it once but also had it mixed with wmo, #2, and a little red fuel, all together about 10gal, in a full tank, and it smelled terrible, and had a good haze, but still ran fine, but when i run 10gal. of wmo i dont get the smell or quite the haze.

could it just be the mix i had, should i try just hyd. oil on its own? i just really dont want that smell back. whats your thoughts?

Try running a lower concentration.

It won't hurt anything even if it does stink.

thanks dave, that is what i was hoping to here.

i also run everything through a 2 micron filter first, is there anything that could get past that to hurt my pump? i have read about many different filtering processes but is this one sufficiant?

2 micron is more than good enough.

Yes sir, I have ran up to a half tank of hydraulic fluid. I posted this question once on here and had a bunch of people telling me it wouldn't burn or some crap like that. So I tried it and it burns fine, I even think it gets better fuel mileage.

i believe mine gets better mpg's too, it seems to burn just fine... did you notice any abnormal or overpowering smells with that much? when i put that mix in, it was horrible, didnt even smell like burnt oil, just smelled like edit

i used to when i had some to burn. made truck quieter thats for sure. obviously i would filter it before running it. i would also be careful of what it came out of. i have heard some system leave heavy metals that make it past filters.

At blends up to 90% works well, I have even run 90-140 gear oil at lower ratios.

i put in 5 gal. in on the last full tank... quite a bit more haze at cold idle than the WMO but the smell, i can hardly stand it. but another thought this is the red hyd. oil... i believe it is schaeffer's. could this stuff be causing the different issues?

I am in the same boat as you- ALOT of hyd oil stored up I also just tried 1/2 tank full and it worked GREAT!! It has been chilly up here, but she was not that bothered by it. Oh yeah, that "stink" is money you didn't spend!!!

I'm running it as well. I get about 300 gallons a month for free. I don't burn nearly that much but I'm building a stock pile. anyways, I run it thru down to 2 microns and water block filter... then I fill up my truck mounted 35 gallon mix tank.. I fill it half way with used hydro oil and toss in my bag of sodium polyacrylate beads, let it sit a day then top off with clean #2 and mix for a few minutes before transfering to my stock tank... the "magic beads" take out any water, anti-freeze, acids and parrafin that gets past the filters
