Sledpulling Hitches...

Who here has made their own sledpulling hitch? I would love to see some pictures because I might start making one here in the next few days. What are the rules that regulate how high it can be according to DHRA? What did ya'll use to put the giant hook of the sled into? I have a crapload of 1" plate so that is probably what I was going to use along with solid 2" square stock. Also on a side note in DHRA you can NOT have twins unless you want to run in the Modified class right?

If you have twins you will have to pull in the super street class. Go to the link below to download the official DHRA rulebook

I just use a drawbar plugged into my reciever. I used some 1/4" plate and gusseted it, it bent downward on the first pull! I also sleeved the inside with 1/4" square tube. The pin is going to break before that thing does. I also use a Clevis through the ball hole as well.

If you want a real advantage move the stock reese hitch forward. This will require removal of your rear bumper but will put the hooking point right at the rear of your bed.

Wont that put it too far forward? As far as going by what the rules say.

"The hooking point must be the rear-most point on the vehicle and must be rearward of the stock location of the tailgate" - DHRA 2007 Rulebook, Version 2.7.4, page 19

I will probably make a new reciever hitch that mounts up in the frame and puts the clevis point at the very edge of the tailgate. It is o.k. to have custom hitches made for this purpose right? I'm thinking I will make it to where it can stay hidden and installed on my truck all the time and then for a sledpull just pull the actual bumper off and remove the tailgate so I can hang as much possible weight in the front...

1. Hitch height to be no more than 26 inches at point of hook before, during and after pull and no closer than 36% of the wheel base to the center point of the rear end. Hitch must be rigid in all directions and solidly mounted. Pulling point can be no more than 1½ inch from back edge of hitching device. No clevis, chains or cables allowed in hitching device. Hitch must be attached to the frame. Hitch to be made of at least 1 inch square stock, or 1 1/8 inch round stock with a 3 inch diameter hole. Hitch must be mounted horizontal.

This is from the rules from a local pulling organization. And if I recall, I only had about another 1" or so of room to go forward while still being legal. Just something to think about. Might want to check the rules of the organization you will be pulling with.
