Hookin Up....Strap Question

My friend wants to hook up. he has a chain and i told him there is no way in hell im going to use a chain to hook. i told him either a strap or we arent hookin.

Now i know i can pull him from here to florida. I just want to know if i should get a new strap. currently i have a brand new 10,000# strap with hooks on the ends that i use incase my ATV gets stuck.
Would it be better to hook up to a sizable truck like a 1/2 ton ram with a 17,000lb strap with no hooks or the 10,000#? What im asking is am i going to blow a 10,000# or would it be fine?

If i got a 17,000# how would i hook it to my truck since it has no hooks. all it has is loops? im getting a GN here soon and i bet that would be the best hook point, but since i dont have it yet i will have to put it on my hitch/reciever. ive heard that the shank on the ball sometimes breaks when put under heavy stress...would i need to get a 2 and 5/16 ball for a stronger shank or will the 2" hold, or would i hook it somewhere else?

The guy that wants to pull has an 01 Ram 1500 5.9L With exhaust and 33x12.50 or 13.50 Yokohoma Geolander Tires.

just want opinions on straps...

Keep that 10K strap away from the truck, especially since it has hooks on the ends.
I'd even shy away from a 17K strap, I have a 36K strap in my recovery gear.

Never hook a strap or chain to the ball, any ball, even a gooseneck ball.

I've hooked to the crossbar of the hitch,
and just fed the strap through the loop after putting it around the crossbar,
you'll then need to find a suitable hook point on the other truck that doesn't require it to be looped through itself though.

You can also put the end of the loop into the reciever, then put the reciever pin through the loop, but a reciever mount shackle would be the best bet.

well thanks for the info. i couldnt find anything bigger than a 17k strap when i went lookin. i got a 10k though because its mainly for my ATV's and i needed the hooks.
ill look elsewhere and find a large strap and maybe a reciever mount shackle

thanks for the info. thats exactly what i needed.

hows this?

I suggest

I have a pintle hook, and a shakle in my tool box, use either or as long as they are closed... I think that 17K strap should work.. Make sure u get ur video camera too!!

We use clevis's. You can get them for about 10 bucks at any farm supply store. I wouldn't use anything below a 30K strap.

2" straps with hoops at the end can be fed into a receiver hitch and held in place with a hitch pin.

I have a 4" strap that is rated arund there. I wouldn't go with anything smaller than a 3" strap though. I have seen a 2" strap brake pulling out a 1/2 pickup. You need the extra strength.

4 wheel parts wholesalers has 30 foot straps rated for 30K for like 35 or 40 bucks, that'd be the way I go. I always just put the loop end into the reciever tube and slide the pin through. It's a little nit picky, but I like doing this versus using a reciver shackle because if you need to be pulled at an angle the reciever shackle has a lot more leverage against the side of the reciever tube.

we always use a 60k strap with a clevis on each end, you can pick it all up at Cummins for around $60 bucks.

but whatever you do dont use a chain, this weekend we all decided to go mudding at a buddies property, well after about an hour my brother finnally got his 86 gmc high sierra stuck, this truck has 7 inches of lift with 35 boggers and a little bad azz 355, so we decide to hook up another buddies 2002 ram 3/4 ton gas, we hooked a 10,000lb tow strap and a chain, we tried just pullin him out but that wasnt working, so they decide to give him a jerk. Well when they gave him a jerk the strap broke which caused the chain to go whiping right in the back of my buddies truck. The chain missed his head by about 8 inches but the strap hit him but it wasnt bad, the truck needs a new back window, a new rearview mirror, It also put 4 dents 1/4 inch deep in his cab. All in all we all got lucky.

well the 17,000lb strap is 20 ft long, and i would plan to wrap it around twice hoping to have about 9 or 10 feet between each truck.

i think id rather just get a 20,000+ strap for safety

I'd rather not do it...period.

If you are set on this, then don't pull each other. Find someone who has a heavy piece of equipment, or another big truck with a driver in it and the foot on the brakes, and use it like a sled. See who can pull it X # of feet the fastest.

Truck against truck can break things quickly. And it only takes one of you to start hopping or bouncing to do it. As once one of you starts doing that, the other will feel the effect even if you aren't doing it too.

some of the best ropes around. the problem with straps is they get really wide as the rating goes up. who wants to deal with a 6" wide strap? They have a 1.5" diameter rope with a rating of 74,000 lbs. and yes these are for recovery. ropes are wound into each other creating a stronger connection than a sewn strap. just a bit expensive is all. ha check out the pic on the 1.5" 20' lond one. tug of war.

By all means, don't hook onto a ball hitch. I had a good high school friend killed when it snapped off went through the windshield of his jeep and hit him in the head. You think it won't happen, but it does.

EXACTLY

why i have a dual purpose pintle hitch, and a clevis.. I have already broken some 1/4 inch chain before at a ranch, i was in four wheel drive yanking a small tree stump out of a lake and i had my dual purpose pintle in the rear and i looped the chain and locked it with a spare padlock i had, and hooked the hook as well, i closed the cover on it and proceeded to yank out the small stump out of the lake, I knew that the chain was gonna break after the first yank, but it was a measly stump 12-14 inch diameter at the most.. Sure enough SNAP!! the chain breaks on a yank, and it had broken from one of the links that was close to the shakle of the lock, and it had come up and hit the top of the pintle.. and it just fell to the ground rather than fly across... and possibly do some more damage..

Just a point to ponder...
