Boosted launch

I apologize if this is a dumb newb question. How do people do a boosted launch with a manual trans? After riding with my buddy in his Duramax with an auto it got me thinking. I'm not going to try it in mine (money maker) but am curious.

well ya start with one foot on the brakes, one foot on the clutch, and one foot on the fuel......... right foot best suited for double duty, hang the edge of the brake peddle with left side of right foot, and roll foot sideways to get on the fuel while starting to let the clutch out, as the truck starts to bog, add more fuel till boost comes up, let out on clutch as you mash the fuel to the floor........

With a stick you do not need to be on the brake. Your truck will build boost "neutral". Go out to a back road and stop. Push the clutch pedal in, hit and hold the skinny pedal to raise your rpms a bit and you should see the boost needle go up. The more rpms the more boost. I would not let the clutch out and hold it against the brakes...but that is just me.

Are you talking about riding the clutch or something along those lines?

These trucks, or any Diesel Engine for that matter will not build boost free revving, they HAVE to have a load on the engine in order to start fueling the engine enough to create high exhaust volume to create boost. With the engines just free revving there is not near enough fuel being injected to create enough exhaust volume to spin the turbo at enough RPM to create boost. And besides, why would the engine need to build boost for just free revving.

Automatic or Manual, if you are in neutral/park with an auto, or neutral/clutch disengaged with a stick you will not create boost. (To a point you will not, but to be technical if you start getting close to red line you may build a couple pounds of boost if you are lucky).

In order to do boosted launches (5psi and up lets say) you have to be in gear, brakes on and begin putting the engine under load.

This is just My Opinion

Yep, the engine must have a load on it to build boost. True for auto or manual.

Well my truck with an HY and the wastegate off will make psi with the clutch pedal in. By 1700rpms it is around 6lbs. Maybe it is because my wastedgate is off and it is the stock turbo??

to do a good boosted launch in a manual you NEED a DD clutch. i've done a few back a few years ago (before i detuned) and i'd redline it, slip the clutch while holding the brake, build ~40 psi of boost and dump the clutch and hold her to the floor. granted, the clutch (sbc 3600 12 button) only lasted for two or three of these. But she would spin all 6 tires on asphalt! quite the ride.

That is quite a bit of boost for only at 1700RPM free revving. Unless the HY's are that much smaller than the HX's? When I used to have my stock HX, with boost elbow, xzt+ and free revving it would be lucky to make 2lbs

I am not sure the specs, but I think it is a 60/60/9. It is gross how fast this little turbo spools . When I upgrade it sounds like it will be a different story.
