For all you sled pullers
For all you sled pullers
I'm pretty interested in sled pulling and I have a few questions about it. First off what are all the different classes? next, do you pull in 4lo or 4hi? Now I know that my tranny probably won't be able to handle it since it is a stock 47RE but would a new valve body be enough to run it in a stock class or something? Thanks guys
You won't hurt the auto that bad if you just want to hook a couple times unless you have some big power adders on there with a stock tranny. Go out there I would put it in 4lo and in 2 and don't let it shift into 3rd. Don't plan on winning but man you will get addicted to it fast. Last year I was pulling a stock truck and now I'm in a whole new class with more things to add.
I'm getting excited, my buddy says they have pull near his cabin in Cummberland Wisconsin and I think I might enter in the competition. So for the start do I Floor it or ease into it or what?
I'm kinda curious about this too... Around here at the Marshfield fair I saw (last year) a few mostly stock if not mildly modified trucks pulling. The best two were a 6.0L powerstroke smoking a little, and a common rail dually work truck. I can't remember who won, bit it was pretty close. I don't think anyone got a full pull... sled weight couldn't have been more than 10K lbs, if that.
I had my stock radials on and was on a limping tranny at the time, so I didn't enter. This year I might show them how its done... or how to break a truck!
I was thinking the 33x12.5 A/T's would help as I saw countless Avalanches and Silverados just digging in around 1/3-1/2 track.
I don't know anything about how to pull, but it seems to me if you were to lock the TCC in high RPM's in 2nd or 3rd on 4 Lo it would pull close to the end...versus a stock stall converter running out of steam? Any thoughts?

The problem with doing this is that it is that the stock converter will not likely hold under full power pulling a sled. If you go with a performance 2 or three disc it should be fine.....then the main clutches will be a problem with out a valve body upgrade....then the input shaft might be a problem. With mostly stock auto it is kindof dicey pulling a sled if the engine has much snort to it.
