Cat 416E backhoe fuel problem
The machine started running real bad with no power. Changed out the fuel filters and all was well for about 5 minutes. It then started stalling. When it dies. You cannot immediatly restart it. But if you wait 5 or 10 minutes it will fire back up and run for 15 seconds and die again. I hooked a 1 gallon jug of clean fuel to the pump and it will run fine untill the jug empties. I wouldnt think i have already plugged filters after 5 min of running. But i cannot find any problems with the lines. I drained a couple gallons of fuel out of the tank and it looks good. I have noticed that when it dies i can open drain on back filter and hear it suck air. Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated

Seriously enough, I have had everything from frozen/plugged vents to dirt/leaves/branches in the tanks,to my personal fave so far, 89 international fuel truck, where the departing driver took care to shove a whole book of meter tickets into the fuel tank. Talk about fun cleaning that up, once we found the problem.
International trucks. 13 letters that spell pure misery... then add a driver.

Ouch
Hey, in newer class 8 trucks, I have to defend international. They make a pretty decent unit for the money, with a large quiet cab and good forward visibility. Not at all like those chached out petercars and kenworths. Nothing better than finding a comfortable position, then looking directly into the overhead console......
Besides, when farmers retire, they need SOMETHING to drive.
how about the original fuel problem?

Caterpillar has issued a service letter concerning fuel transfer pump failures on the E-Series backhoes. I wouldn't say it is common for one to fail but I have changed out several in the last year.
Pull the LH panel off of the engine compartment, disconnect the fuel supply line to the IP and run it into a soda bottle. Bump the key to the start position and the pump should fill a 20oz bottle in less than 10 seconds.
If you have a lot of foam or a slow stream, either the pump has failed or the inlet on the fuel filter base is clogged.
If you can give me the backhoes serial # I can get you specific information.

Why couldn't YOU do that Pind? Or Tim? Instead of making fun of a very good truck!
