CONSTRUCTION FIRM TAKES AIM AT DIESEL SPEED RECORD
"U.K.-based JCB Ltd., which describes itself as the world’s fifth-largest maker of construction equipment, hopes to break the FIA Group III, Class 10 supercharged diesel streamlinerland-speed record this summer at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. The current record of 235.7 mph was set in 1973 by Virgil Snyder at Bonneville.

JCB hopes to top the 300 mph barrier with its specially designed 29-ft Dieselmax car outfitted with a pair of 5.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder oil burners and two six-speed transmissions. Each engine generates a whopping 750 hp and 1,100 lb-ft of torque, which makes the car twice as powerful as a Formula One race car. RAF pilot Andy Green, who previously set a supersonic land speed record, will be behind the wheel for
the diesel record attempt.

The 5.0-liter diesels are modified versions of the two-year-old 4.4-liter JCB production unit used in backhoe loaders. In addition to the two-stage turbos, other upgrades include a drect-injection Ricardo combustion system. Fuel is delivered via two parallel 23,300-psi ommon rail pumps. The cylinder head is modified to accommodate the larger injectors. The valvetrain is carried over from the construction application with the exception of high-temperature exhaust valve material and up-rated valve springs.

Ricardo calculates that the speed record attempt will require an intake airflow of almost 5 tons per hour delivered at the salt flat’s 4,200-ft altitude, where ambient air pressure is 85% of that at sea level. While the production engine only requires a boost pressure of 14 psi, the Dieselmax’s two turbodiesels require 75 psi at full power.............."

 

The last Diesel land speed record was set in 1973?


Come on, you could probably get better than 236 miles per hour with a highly bombed Cummins in a Pacer.

 

I would love to see that thing go. So wher can I pick up on of those 4 bangers that make 750/1100!

 

they'll either do it, or it'll make for a spectacular insurance seminar. Cummins in a pacer? hmmmm, cuttin torch and a welder!

 

I say Pacer because it was more aerodynamic than the Gremlin, which is good for high speed attempts.

The Cummins would look really good being surrounded by glass on all 10 sides of the hatchback compartment, too.


(Didn't the Banks Sidewinder get up to 200~ish with a Cummins in a Dakota?)

 

That is one thing I didn't think I would ever hear (or read)! A discussion on the aerodynamic drag of a Gremlin!

The Banks truck was in a different class. Thats why its not the record they are trying to beat.

DIESEL-POWERED VEHICLE HITS 317 MPH
"JCB Ltd., a U.K.-based maker of construction equipment, raced its 29-ft Dieselmax streamliner to a measured-mile speed of 317 mph last week at the Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. The speed, a record for a diesel-powered vehicle at the Flats, was the average of two runs: one at 308 mph and the other at 325 mph.JCB and partner Ricardo plc, which developed the twin diesel design, now plan to make it official with a sanctioned attempt to break the relatively slow current diesel record of 235.7 mph set 23 years ago. This will require replacing the engines used last week with two identical units that have been certified by FIA inspectors at Ricardo's Shoreham technical center. For the record attempt, which is expected to come later this week in Bonneville, the vehicle will need to complete two runs within one hour with an average speed above the current record............."
