Towing a backhoe

Good day all,
Just got back from hauling a backhoe for my uncle. The truck did not even know it was back there, trailer and backhoe was 8800 lbs. Tranny temps did get to 200, that was the only concern. This truck is just waiting for something heavy to hook to. Awesome afternoon. Just wanted to share.

These trucks will pull won't they? On the issue of pulling equipment, DOT and the guys with the badges are really looking into the commercial tags around here on the smaller 1tons and 3/4 tons pulling any equipment bobcats, backhoes, small dozers etc. etc. They are hammering the guys for no commercial tags, and no commercial insurance. I know you will say that you pulled it for your kin and no money was exchanged but they will let you prove that in court is what I have been seeing. Any piece of equipment to them is something used in commerce and they are stopping one and all and just letting it go to the judge. Goodluck,,,Rick

Rick, thanks for the heads up. I was not aware that DOT was getting that cranky, but any source of revenue is what they are looking for. I will keep that in mind.

Tiny, 8800 lbs is lightweight hauling. read some of the threads about heavy loads. These trucks and cargo are grossing 30,000lbs!!!

The heaviest I pulled was my 16' gooseneck dump trailer filled with 16 yards of wet mulch. The truck and trailer empty weighs 10,500lbs and the mulch weighs about 800lbs wet. That's around 23,300lbs

Tiny,

How did your trans get so warm? I would think that with that DTT in there you shouldn't see anymore than 170-175. I've personally never had temps exceed 150 when towing and that was in OD with 23K+ on the wagon. Where you in town? Lots of stop and go? That might be it.

Smokindog, yes it was in town. Ran truck out on highway after unload and broought her back to ~130, then came home.

TxDiesel, it was a mini backhoe with front end loader. Not huge, but it did use most of the 16' trailer it was on. I know it is not a huge load, but it still felt good pulling it. Had to run through town to see truck and trailer in store windows. I am still waiting for the big load to pull, just have not found it yet.

If you were here

and you were daring, i work cattle next month, you have ur choice of trailer if you are daring, 36 foot triple axle gooseneck that holds at minimum 18-1500-2000 lb cows, (really crammed in there tho) or a 28 that holds at most comfortably 13, and thru the hills in three rivers, You need a one ton for either or, That big enough a load? I admit the largest cattlewise or livestock ive towed is that same 28 footer with 30 steers in the 600-800 lb range, next largest would be a 24 footer loaded down with about 20K in cows.... still fun to tow..
