I think the key is gusset support between the hitch and the frame when using the adapters. Mumby has them, but you could do your own with a welder as well.

Perhaps Mumby could come up the a hitch that fits the pin box of 5vers that has a 4 inch round tube like a flatdeck goose trailer. That way you could use either a ball or a pin. My last truck I would tow my flatdeck with a 5ver hitch but park the trailer with a ball on the front of a small 4X4 just by changing out the tube.
