seems to be a loophole with this though - the issuing officer never saw the actual speed of the vehicle, and the guy who sees the speeds never issues the tickets. i would think this would be be easy to get out of in court, that is if it's worth your time to go to court in the area you were ticketed . . . (might have been Bankdude who filled me in on this 'loophole' . . .) - but it doesn't matter to him because he doesn't speed anyway!!

Yup. Got off on a big one where they "claimed" I was speeding,... but of course I don't speed so it was a case of the wrong guy getting pulled over. Both officers need to be in court, and that doesnt happen too often.

Was in Red Deer today and saw that the RC's have stepped up their game in regards to unmarked cruisers.

First saw both of them behind me in the rear view mirror coming up Highway 2 towards Gasoline Alley. First was a 2011 Ford Super Duty Crew Cab 4X4 Light Brown in color, looked stone stock other than a typical driving light bar and a set of chrome step bars. Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. Second was a 2011 Harley Edition Super Duty Crew Cab 4X4 in the black color scheme. Same thing, typical looking truck with nothing out of he ordinary to set it apart from any other truck on the road.

The only reason I noticed them was they were running lighted up going somewhere in a hurry. Everything is hidden, all the strobes, everything. There were not even any extra antennas on the trucks.

At first I thought it was a joke as they went by me. Caught up to them at the Sports Hall of Fame, they had a Corvette pulled over and the two drivers were full RCMP uniformed.

Just thought I would give everyone a heads up on this new tactic.

Jeff

Hey Jeff. Big thanks for the heads up on those.

(Not that I speed of course.)

Are they jurisdictionally just in town or do they play with the sherrifs outside city limits? Any sightings of the trucks further out I wonder?

Coming home easter weekend from the chuck to cowtown the sherrifs were sure out in full force. Saw them in places I never have and they were everywhere...

Lawnchair lazer off of the north pigeon lake overpass shooting southbound with a fleet of southbound cruizers on the onramp (they use this trap on several overpasses, but always seems to be southbound traffic)

Black ghost sitting under the olds overpass was a new one. Surprizingly hard to see in the shadow.

A few marked cars way off on side roads with quick access. Didnt seem to be using radar, I think they were observing and pursuing.

Lots of tax dollars at work keeping the roads safe, certainly not generating tax revenue or anything like that.

The fishing hole is changin....

(Not that I speed of course).

I know this is off thread, but on my last trip up north, I had the cruise set at or under the speed limit. Was really difficult to do this, but I had time (I was on the clock) I got 1074km to 105litres of fuel. I almost fell over. Of course I didn't get that kinda fuel mileage coming back home.

Its a good thing they bought an $80k pickup to pull people over with, a much cheaper car just wouldn't be as effective.

CPS has a silver "Ram 2500" quadcab(don't know if it is a gasser or diesel---looked like a 3rd genner)it has a checker plate tool box in the back---no visible lights. It must of surprised the "Mustang" 5.0 that went screaming by the officer and me.I was in my company vehicle on Deerfoot and was clipping along at a 105 with the cop beside me when the "Mustang" flew by---scared the heck out of me when he lit them up and chased after him-----total surprise to me and probable this guy too.DW.----HEADS-UP commercial drivers---inspection time is upon us once again and it seems they(DOT) are having 3-4 different locations thought out the city nailing for every infraction for the next few weeks. This is a good thing for the most part but they are getting picky now(fire extinguisher/first aid kit/triangles/spare washer fluid etc)---even wanted to know if i had any spare bulbs/headlights etc.Guy beside me was a landscaper and had no Tare/Gross weight rating on his ride-----truck was taken "out of service" right there.GOOD LUCK FELLAS.DW

Any of you run radar detectors? Are they effective? Just bought a car that came with one.

If it is really old it may not have the needed bells and whistles. I see more and more Lazer and POP and they do use varying Ka bands around town and the highway. But even an older (6 or 7 years old) one will pick up most of the common Ka.

I have a passport 9500ix which is a great detector but the new techniques they are using on QEII and the ghosts reduce their effectiveness if you are the target.
Shooting laser down from a cherry picker or overpass doesnt give a signal much bounce distance for the detector to pick up and the ghost trucks/cars just speed match you and then turn on the lights.
They are helpful though in letting you know where a lazy officer is that just leaves the radar on as they cruise the highway or pops it at every car that passes, but they are way less effective today than they used to be. On the highway I get a couple miles heads up on the easy ones.
I use one as insurance against the easy ones, but you still have to keep your eyes open.

The cops are sure more hungry these days, than the old days. I sure miss the days when it was ok to drive 120kph on most of Alberta Hiways. Down in the states most of the hiways are 75mph, seen a few at 85mph. Makes our 110kph, look pretty whimpy. I guess I shouldn't complain to much Ontario is 90kph, same with most of BC roads.
