Found a Sneaky Oil Leak!
Found a Sneaky Oil Leak!
I Found a sneaky oil leak this morning, so I thought I'd share my findings with everyone.
I dont know if the 24V's are different, if this post is not in the right place, sorry Gonzo, please move to the appropriate place.

Anyway, the oil return line from the turbo drops down and tucks between the oil filter and the block. (12V engine. May be different on 24V's?).
This return line is a metal tube. However, between the oil filter and the block, it goes through a rubber fitting into another metal tube.
This rubber fitting has two hose clamps (One for each metal tube).
Both of the hose clamps were lose, lose enough to be leaking a little oil.
It was difficult to get to without removing the oil filter, but could be managed with a screw driver and a box end wrench.

I dont want to imagine how much oil would be lost if one or both of the hose clamps let go while driving down the freeway.

Just something to check out.

Rich
Re:Found a Sneaky Oil Leak!
I saw this on my truck when I removed the turbo, I can not imagine how you managed to tighten those clamps, let alone see them with the turbo in place!

Thanks for the tip Rich!
Re:Found a Sneaky Oil Leak!
I was lucky.
The top hose clamp could be reached with a long screw driver.
To tighten the bottom clamp, I had to use a combination wrench and used the box end to tighten the clamp. However, in order to gain access to the clamp, I had to crawl under the truck and approach the clamp from the bottom.
As mentioned, both clamps were very lose.
Have my turbo off now, greasy mess down there. I was planning on replacing that connection. Had to remove the filter as well.
